The European Society for Textual Scholarship is an international and interdisciplinary forum for the theory and practice of textual scholarship in Europe. Our aim is to allow dialogue among scholars from different countries, especially through conferences every two years. After three Colloquia on different subjects (Leicester 2001, The Book in the 21st Century; Antwerp 2002, Reading Notes; Copenhagen 2003, The Book as Artefact), we now holding our first conference in Alicante (Spain) from November 25th to 27th 2004. The conference’s main subject will be ‘Editing Texts in Multiple Versions’, a theme that can be tackled from several areas such as scholarly editing, textual theories and practices, analytical bibliography, and current research in textual studies.

The proceedings of the conference will be published in the society yearbook Variants. The conference is sponsored by the Universidad de Extremadura, Universitat de Alacant, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Universitat de Lleida.

Accepted speakers should deliver the text of their papers before October 23th by e-mail in order to let the translators study them in advance.

The conference is open to members of the Society only. Regular membership is 50 euros (including the yearbook). Membership for students is 15 euros (not including the yearbook). Conference fee: 40 euros.
